What We Do Carers Reference Group

At Youth Focus, we believe that the carers of young people are an integral part of their journey. We want to make sure relatives, significant others and carers of mental health consumers have a voice.

Make a difference as part of our Carers Reference Group

The Carers Reference Group is a collective of like-minded, lived-experience adults who aim to make a positive difference by supporting other families and carers of young people experiencing mental health challenges.

What is a Carers Reference Group (CRG)?

The CRG is made up of adults who are passionate about youth mental health and the health and wellbeing of young people.

The CRG aims to:

  • Provides carers with the opportunity to have input into the strategic direction of Youth Focus
  • Amplify the voices of carers, ensuring they are heard and acted upon
  • Provide personal and professional development opportunities and experience in public speaking, media, marketing, communication and advocacy
  • Allow carers to provide input to service policy development within Youth Focus
  • Demonstrate good practice by involving carers in the youth and mental health sector

What is involved as a member?

Carers on the CRG have the opportunity to be involved in a number of ways including:

  • Opportunity to provide input and feedback to improve our mental health services and programs
  • Involvement in the ongoing continuous improvement and further development of our services to improve the lives and experiences of other families and carers
  • Advocacy of youth mental health
  • Media and community engagement opportunities
  • Community events and projects
  • Marketing, promotion and community awareness activities
  • Evaluation and research
  • Collaborating with other local community organisations

By providing a variety of activities it is hoped that it will provide the opportunity to draw on carers strengths, abilities and capabilities, while also appealing to a broad range of interests.

What kind of support does a CRG member receive?

Training and education will be provided as needed and identified by the CRG and/or Youth Focus, in a variety of areas. These may include leadership, communication, project management, media engagement and mental health.
